Is Your Dog's Bowl Safe?
I ordered this bowl the second I learned 'Oli's bowl may be radioactive!
When I was preparing to be a first time pawrent to ‘Oli, I had some skin in the game having grown up with pets and being a pet sitter and all, however I still felt like there were a million options and so much to learn.
I want only the very best for my puppy and being that this was my first time as the true dog owner I was starting from scratch as far as gear went so shopping was a must. With what felt like a thousand of every bowl, bed, leash, etc. to choose from I got overwhelmed and decision fatigue set in.
I spent more time than I would be willing to admit trying to find the very best of each item, and in the end I bought some items that didn’t turn out to be as great as I thought they would be.
One example of this is when it comes to ‘Oli’s water dish.
The Radioactive Water Dish
I had no real criteria and though this would be one I could pick easily and not have to stress over… wrong.
I had looked for a simple stainless steel bowl that wouldn’t slide all over the floor and a bonus if it was a “slow feeder” even though I didn’t intent to feed ‘Oli from a bowl. I found just that and it was a hit with ‘Oli. He loved the water bowl I got him because it was the middle of summer and hot. He liked resting his head above the water and I thought I had gotten a great bowl, but…
Do I know what the bowl is truly made out of? No.
Do I know if the manufacturing process cross contaminates the metal? Again, no.
So how can I trust that it is safe to house all the water he drinks that helps him to grow and develop? I can’t.
Like many others I bought the bowl off Amazon and assumed that the company would handle the safety but I don’t actually trust the brand.
Sadly, the world we live in often is more concerned with profit than safety and when I did some digging later on the important information listed: “directions: for pet use only”. If the bowl is not safe for me to drink out of why would I believe it is safe for ‘Oli to drink out of?
The bowl I purchased happens to be manufactured in India and has some quite valid 1 star reviews regarding the safety of the product.
As I listened to the Shaped by Dog podcast episode 62: 12 Keys to Helping My Dogs Live a Long and Happy Life #62 (linked here) I realized that overlooking the safety of the water bowl was a big mistake, one I needed to remedy as soon as possible.
That is when I found Basis Products, with a background in mechanical engineering and having first hand experience approving various products for use with potable water systems I am a bit ashamed it took me so long to thing about the safety of his bowl and the grade of stainless steel, but none the less it was overlooked originally.
Basis Pet however has put great care into creating safe bowls for our furry friends. They called me out immediately in their Tips for selecting the best dog bowls page1
I didn’t know the grade of Stainless Steel ‘Oli’s current water bowl was made of. It was the best stainless steel bowl I could find on Amazon and I hadn’t thought to look. But as I looked into it later on, it became clear that his current bowl was not up to my standards. I knew it was time to invest in a Basis Pet bowl!
Safety First
Basis Pet bowls are made out of 18/8 stainless steel, safe for pets and humans to eat or drink out of. Basis Pet takes careful concern to ensure the bowls are NOT contaminated during the manufacturing process and as an added bonus they are sourced and manufactured right here in the US.
‘Oli’s Poppaw, who is also an engineer with quite a bit of experience in manufacturing, was so into these bowls he bought one for himself! And the bowls were delivered in less than 72 hours.
I feel so much better knowing ‘Oli is eating and drinking out of safe dishes that the added price point was worth it.
We got ‘Oli a medium bowl which is a great size and chose to add the ‘Ultra Grip Mini Pet Bowl Mat’ since he gets water everywhere when he drinks. If I were to do it over, I personally would not get the mat again. ‘Oli is so messy that even the large mat isn’t enough to keep our floors dry and it isn’t all too grip-y after all, but the bowl itself is amazing!
I would however consider getting a bowl cozy, while we haven’t had the chance to try it out yet, I think it will do a great job of keeping the bowl in place and add some style.
