Fur, Fur, and MORE FUR!
‘Oli has been shedding like crazy.
I am still holding onto hope that it is related to it being spring and the biological fact that he needs to blow his winter coat in preparation for the warmer months.
Double Coat
For those that don’t know, heeler’s have two coats.
The double coat helps them regulate their temperature in the various seasons, however this means when spring comes around so does a whole bunch of unneeded winter fur.
Yes even in Hawaii, apparently.
Though it does feel a bit silly being that pretty much all months are warm and summer-like here. There still are subtle shifts in the forecast and regardless of our climate, the Australian Cattle Dog as a breed is hardwired to have two seasonal coats. Even if Hawaii doesn’t.
Fun Fact: Blue heelers get their color from their second coat. That is why when they are born, aside from their markings, they look like little white polar bears until about 3-4 weeks old when their color starts to come in. The blue Merle look of the blue heeler comes from the two coats (white and black fur) mixing together.

Upgrade Needed
Until about April, ‘Oli really didn’t shed.
I had prided myself in that fact since I worked hard on his diet; sourcing him only the very best and assumed his lack of shedding was to be attributed to that, however his diet hasn’t changed much and yet his shedding has.
We currently are working to reduce the amount of fur floating around our house during this spring, coat dump with weekly brushing, bi-weekly showers, and regular vacuuming.
Still, it seemed like, there is fur everywhere. So we came to the conclusion that it was time for a vacuum upgrade.
Having recently moved, it only took a week for noticeable fur to pile up around the house.
We retired our old vacuum during our move and were so ready for our new CleanView Pet Slim Vac to arrive on our doorstep.
Our new vacuum arrived in just 4 days! But that isn’t even the best part…
